New guidebook advances social equity in marine conservation
In 2025, CEESP supported the launch of a new Guidebook for Assessing and Improving Social Equity in Marine Conservation at the 2025 IUCN World Conservation Congress.
IUCN CEESP recently launched a new "Guidebook for Assessing and Improving Social Equity in Marine Conservation”. The guidebook responds to growing recognition that conservation outcomes depend not only on ecological success, but also on recognition of rights, meaningful participation, and fair distribution of benefits and costs.
Grounded in a common framework spanning six dimensions of equity—recognitional, procedural, management, environmental, distributional, and contextual and structural—the guidebook offers practical tools to help marine conservation initiatives reflect on and improve their governance processes and social outcomes.
Recognising diverse governance contexts and management capacities across different marine conservation initiatives, it presents three adaptable assessment options: a Rapid Equity Assessment, a Stakeholders and Rightsholders Assessment, and a Co-produced and Customised Equity Assessment.
Aligned with the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the guidebook supports managers, governments, communities, and rightsholders in embedding equity into marine conservation governance, decision-making, and action.
