LOGMe II : Towards restored Sahelian landscapes offering opportunities

From May 27 to 29, 2025, Dakar hosted the regional launch workshop for the Sahelian Landscapes, a Land of Opportunities - Expanding Proven Pathways (LOGMe II) project, marking the official start of this ambitious initiative. Promoted by the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE), in partnership with the Global Mechanism of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, this project aims to strengthen the resilience and economic opportunities of Sahelian landscapes through land restoration and the enhancement of livelihoods.

Following an initial phase (2020–2024) implemented in Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Niger, LOGMe II is now being extended to Benin and Senegal. The project is being implemented by IUCN in close collaboration with national partners in the five target countries. Two governance bodies are responsible for coordinating the project: a Steering Committee for strategic guidance and an Advisory Committee, a platform for technical and policy exchange, which met for the first time on this occasion.

Rich and strategic discussions

During two days of intense discussions, representatives from governments, implementing agencies, technical partners, universities, and civil society were able to familiarize themselves with the project's objectives, methodology, and expected results. The discussions highlighted the importance of a common understanding of the issues at stake, inclusive approaches, the long-term sustainability of results, and the value of the achievements of LOGMe I.

The workshop highlighted the need to integrate ecosystem-based approaches, strengthen resilient agricultural value chains, and promote green jobs. The active participation of academia was strongly encouraged to ensure a solid scientific basis for the implementation of actions.

Ambitious and inclusive results

LOGMe II aims to generate several key impacts :

  • Concrete commitments from stakeholders for effective implementation
  • Expansion of the project based on the successes of phase I
  • Inclusive governance promoting synergies between actors
  • Better understanding of local contexts to adapt interventions
  • Integration of sustainability from the planning stage of activities.

An informative field visit

A mission to the Thiès plateau, organized in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Senegalese Agency for Reforestation and the Great Green Wall (ASERGVM), allowed participants to discover successful land restoration and community resilience practices. This immersion reinforced understanding of the realities on the ground and will inspire future interventions.

Strategic communication for greater visibility

The event was covered in the print media, audiovisual media, and on partners' social networks, raising the profile of the project and increasing public awareness. With LOGMe II, Sahelian landscapes are not only being restored: they are becoming fertile ground for innovation, resilience, and sustainable opportunities for communities.
