IslandPlas Innovation Advances to the Global Ocean Hackathon Stage
The IslandPlas Challenge team has been awarded first place at the 2025 Ocean Hackathon Africa in Cape Town for their innovative solution, Uber Plastic, a digital system designed to create value along the PET bottle recycling chain.
At the 2025 Ocean Hackathon Africa in Cape Town, Genovefa Feksi, IUCN Tanzania’s National Project Officer for IslandPlas Zanzibar, and Dr. Imogen Napper, Blue Science Manager at IUCN ESARO, led a challenge for a team of talented young professionals. After an intense 48-hour sprint with little sleep spent identifying challenges and designing innovative tools, the team emerged as the regional winner.
The winning team (a group of young professionals including data experts, web designers, app developers, and environmental scientists) developed Uber Plastic, a mobile and web-based platform that links plastic collectors, community members, transporters, and producers. Together, they turned messy plastic waste information into clear, useful insights that can help communities and governments tackle marine pollution.
“This is proof that collaboration, local knowledge, and dedication can produce solutions that really make a difference,” said Dr. Imogen Napper from IUCN.
The datasets shared by Cabo Verde and São Tomé & Príncipe from the IslandPlas project formed the backbone of this solution, enabling the team to map, analyse, and visualise plastic pollution across island nations in a way that is practical and easy to use. Their winning concept (a mobile app and website platform) created a system that enables financial incentives for each actor in the value chain, promoting the collection and recycling of PET bottles while reducing marine litter. They created products that integrate intuitive data visualisation tools, an AI-powered chatbot for user support, and gamified learning components to enhance awareness and participation.
The Ocean Hackathon is an intense 48-hour event where teams work around the clock to bring ideas to life. The IslandPlas team’s victory in the regional edition earns them a place at the Global Grand Finale in Brest, France, where they will represent Africa and the island nations on the world stage.
“It shows how small island nations can lead change on big ocean issues,” expressed Genovefa Feksi, a project officer for IslandPlas Project.
The team expressed gratitude to OceanHub Africa, mentors, and the organising partners for creating an inspiring environment that fostered collaboration, creativity, and innovation for ocean health.
From local datasets to international recognition, IslandPlas is turning ocean waste into opportunity, creating cleaner seas and a brighter future for all.
