Global EbA Fund - Support for the Implementation and Upscaling of Ecosystem-based Adaptation
The Global EbA Fund is a catalytic funding mechanism for supporting innovative approaches to Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) to create enabling environments for its mainstreaming and scaling – to enhance the resilience of people and ecosystems to the impacts of climate change at a global scale.
EbA is a nature-based solution that harnesses biodiversity and ecosystem services to reduce vulnerability and build resilience of human communities to climate change. EbA is defined as the use of biodiversity and ecosystem services as part of an overall adaptation strategy to help people to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change (CBD, 2009 & 2010).
EbA is the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of ecosystems and their services to reduce the vulnerability of communities and ecosystems to the impacts of climate change. This could include the conservation, sustainable management and restoration of ecosystems like forests, grasslands, wetlands, mangroves or coral reefs to reduce the harmful impacts of climate hazards including shifting patterns or levels of rainfall, changes in maximum and minimum temperatures, stronger storms, and increasingly variable climatic conditions.
Structure of project
The Global EbA Fund is financed by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) and co-managed by IUCN and UNEP. The Fund’s Steering Committee consists of representatives from these four entities providing guidance for the direction of operations and the priorities of the Fund. The Fund has a growing portfolio of over 50 projects across various ecosystems forming a community of EbA practitioners working across sectors and countries.
