Regen10 – Scaling regenerative food systems

IUCN is a key partner of Regen10, a multistakeholder initiative aiming at promoting Regenerative Agriculture. IUCN is working with 1000 Landscapes for 1 billion people as part of Regen10 to strengthen and support landscape partnerships, which bring together stakeholders within the same landscape to develop and implement a shared approach to transitioning food systems.

Regen10 was set up in response to the growing interest in regenerative food systems, with the key aim of putting farmers' needs and experiences at the centre of policy and business decisions designed to scale-up practices that can achieve regenerative outcomes.  As part of Regen10, IUCN engages with Indigenous Peoples Organisations across the globe to understand their food systems practices and how to prevent the reversal of the currently regenerative food systems in their landscapes. IUCN also supported Indigenous Peoples Organisations to provide inputs into the Regen10 Outcome Framework for regenerative agriculture.

Case studies and success stories

IUCN uses the PANORAMA framework in a systematic approach to case studies, enabling easier interpretation of impacts and the possibilities for replication and scaling up. PANORAMA Case Studies in preparation include sustainable landscapes for the future in Kharagpur, India; Nature-based Solutions in the Guatemalan Highlands; accelerating sustainable agriculture in the Sahel in Burkina Faso; regreening in Bugera, Rwanda; and integrated water resource management in Seboya, Rwanda. Sustainable agriculture and Nature-based Solutions

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) have the potential to provide a “triple-win” for people, planet, and economy, offering a valuable pathway for farmers, businesses, and conservationists. NbS is now a widely used concept in many sectors and among decision-making bodies, however it needs a clear and robust base, using the best available information. 

This IUCN publication aims to provide that base, focusing on the relationship between sustainable agricultural practices and the concept of Nature-based Solutions, and specifically the applicability of the IUCN Global Standard for NbS in agricultural contexts.

Agriculture landscapes and OECMs

OECMs are “Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures”, which run alongside the more conventional Protected Areas and offer many of the same biodiversity and conservation benefits in the drive for Target 3 of the Kunming-Montral Global Biodiversity Framework, to conserve at least 30% of the earth’s land and waters by 2030. Agricultural landscapes have great potential as OECMs.  

NATAE living labs

The IUCN Food and Agricultural Systems team is actively involved in the NATAE project, notably through helping to monitor six living labs across various countries in North Africa. These labs function as collaborative hubs where food system actors come together to identify and test agroecological practices, laying the groundwork for sustainable agricultural transformation in the region and offering valuable insights into the evolving landscape of agroecology in North Africa.
